About the book

8-Track Flashbacks is a collection of amusing stories that take the reader on a nostalgic journey through the 1960s as seen through the eyes of an adolescent boy growing up in the small town of Menomonee Falls, WI.

The ’60s was a decade of turmoil. From the politics of Civil Rights and the anti-war movement to the explosion of rock n’ roll, it seemed the whole world was embracing radical change—everyone had a cause, including author, Tom Alt. His personal cause, the pursuit of the three ‘B’s—balls, babes, and beer—lead him on a number of adolescent adventures that, when looking back, provided the foundation for his adult life. Despite reckless decisions, a few indiscretions and plenty of fun, he somehow managed to survive the foolhardiness of his youth.

As an adult, Tom found the music of his youth evoked strong memories and played an incredibly important part in his life. It gave voice to his fears and fantasies, while providing a rhythm for his march through the teen years. Taking the number one song from each year of the 60’s, Tom traces his journey from an adolescent boy in a small town to a young adult in a big city.  Despite historical events that were changing the world, what mattered most for many teenage boys was throwing a ball, getting the girl, and drinking beer behind your parent’s backs—not so much different than the youth of today. To the rhythms of the songs from a bygone era, Tom Alt reminds us of what we once were and why looking back shows us all, how far we’ve come.
